About Coderbyte
Coderbyte is a place built for anyone to practice and perfect their programming skills. Challenges are added almost every day so you can work on applying
your algorithmic thought process on any problem you want at anytime. Coderbyte is built on improving your ability to work on common logic, mathematical, and
algorithmic problems you might one day encounter.
Earn points by completing challenges and then climb the rankings. We would also love to use our communities
programming challenges, so feel free to write a challenge set for us that other coders can work on. The main event here at Coderbyte
would definitely be the competitions we host. Compeitions are available only to *Tier 2 coders and are opened every few weeks.
So take challenges, earn points, and compete to win prizes!
How the Challenges Work
Each challenge is worth a total of 10 points: 5 of those points are for getting the correct test case outputs and the other 5 are for how quickly you complete the challenge. The timing periods for challenges are displayed on the information page right before you are taken to the code editor. It explains how many points you receive for landing in certain periods (ie. 4 points if code is submitted between 10 - 12 minutes). As for the test case outputs, there are usually 10 test cases that are tested against your code to determine how well it can run. Ten test cases means each one is worth half a point.
The Tier System
At Coderbyte we strive to make it easy for people just coming in to get used to the online coding environment and not become too intimidated from
the difficulty of some challenges. This is the reason for creating Tier 1 and Tier 2 challenges.
Tier 1: A coder is placed into Tier 1 when his or her total number of points is between 0 and 99. Tier 1 challenges generally tend to be
less complex and quicker to solve. Tier 1 coders are not eligible to compete in Coderbyte competitions though. If you are in Tier 1 and you do want to
compete in the competitions, the only solution is to earn points and rank up to Tier 2.
Tier 2: A coder is placed into Tier 2 when his or her total number of points is 100 and over. Tier 2 challenges are harder to solve
and require more advanced algorithmic thinking. A Tier 2 coder can
compete in the competitions Coderbyte hosts!
Writing Challenges
Anyone is free to write challenge sets for us. You can do so by clicking on the "Write" button in the Coding Area. Challenges should be written similarly to the challenges we at Coderbyte write. You can decide whether you want to write a challenge for Tier 1 or Tier 2. Once we receive your written challenge, we'll review it and determine if and when it should be put up. You receive 5 points for every written challenge we choose to feature.
